Iginla's hat trick helps Flames beat Wild

Vesa Toskala made his Calgary debut, stopping 27 shots in the start. In a deal before this past Wednesday's trade deadline, the Flames acquired Toskala from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

Guillaume Latendresse scored both goals for the Wild, who have dropped two straight and four of six overall. Niklas Backstrom made only 19 saves in the setback.

Ahead 3-2, Iginla lit the lamp on the power play at the 13:45 mark of the third to give Calgary a two-goal margin. Iginla's one-timer following a faceoff found the top right portion of the net.

Iginla completed the hat trick and sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 1:33 to go.

The Flames drew first blood just 19 seconds into the first period. Steve Staios' slapper from the right point was tipped into the net by Bourque. The score was 2-0 after Giordano scored on a wrister at the 2:44 mark.

Minnesota got a goal back at the 9:53 mark of the second. Martin Havlat controlled the puck along the right boards and slid a pass in front for Latendresse, whose backhander beat Toskala.

Iginla's slapper on the power play with 6:49 remaining put the Flames up 3-1. But the Wild got the goal back on Latendresse's power-play score with 4:28 left. Brent Burns hit a streaking Latendresse with a perfect pass, and the forward completed the play with a big slap shot.

Game Notes

The Flames went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Wild went 1-for-4 with the man advantage...Minnesota leads the season series with Calgary, 3-1.

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
